North Down Annual Slot Car Racing 2006

30/5/06 - North Down Group

On Tuesday 30th May, North Down Advanced Motorists, attended their annual slot car racing night.

This year the location of the event had moved from the scout camp in Crawfordsburn Country Park, to Old Forge Models, a new track in Gransha (near Comber). This circuit has 6 parallel lanes and proved for really good entertainment.

On the night, 14 members of the North Down group attended and competed in the Grand Prix style event consisting of several heat races to qualify for the finals. The racing was fast and furious with plenty of close contests and a few too many 'racing' incidents. The cars were mechanically identical with replica bodies of Audi TT's and Porsche Boxsters. Lap times weren't offically recorded but some people managed laps of under 11 secs.

After the Grand Prix event, a Single Lap Shootout was held to see who could gain the fastest lap time in the same car. The car was a model Subaru Impreza WRC, with a stonger magnet than before, and an average lap time was around 13secs (for those who managed to complete a lap).

The evening was eventually won by Keith Patterson who won both the Grand Prix and set the fastest 'offical' time in the Single Lap Shootout, with Alistar Gillispie and John Bingham taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
